188 and 190 King Street
Under the Almond Trees opened in 2017 at its original location in downtown Charleston. As demand grew, it soon became clear the store needed to expand. And so began the purchase and renovation of the two neighboring shop spaces at 188 King Street and 190 King Street.
Renovation took nearly three years and combined these two historic buildings – one from the 1700s, the other from the 1800s – into one. With input from the Preservation Society of Charleston and the Historic Society, we worked hard to maintain and protect the architectural integrity and charm of the original construction. Much of the original brickwork is now exposed, and the earthquake bolts put in place after the 1886 earthquake are visible, too. The renovated space opened in May 2021 and features glass openings and a fantastic deck out back, perfect for hosting events.
With 8,000 square feet of retail space, we’re able to carry more baby gear, maternity items, kids’ clothing and toys, and great gifts. Come visit us at 190 King Street and explore for yourself.

Owner Hillary Lamendola
Hillary loves children and has a background in childhood education, having earned her master’s degree in early childhood special education. Combining her love of children and fascination for baby gear, she dreamed of opening a baby boutique for several years but never found the right opportunity. Shortly after moving from Charlotte to Charleston in 2017 to be closer to family, she noticed that downtown Charleston didn’t have a baby gear store, and she decided it was time to open the store she always dreamed of.
The thing Hillary likes most about Under the Almond Trees is getting to know the customers and their families. It’s a joy seeing them over the years as the little ones grow, the families get bigger, and new siblings come along.
Fun fact: Hillary’s last name, “Lamendola,” means “almond” in Italian dialect, which was the inspiration for the store’s unique name.
